The Museum as Study Object
Henie Onstad Kunstsenter
August 16 – October 21, 2012

MoDERNISM MACHINE is a year-long research project by Professor Dag Erik Elgin and students Bjarne Bare, Mari Opsahl, and Henrik Mojord Jahnsen from the Academy of Fine Art in Oslo. Making Henie Onstad Kunstsenter the object of study, the exhibition investigates the centre’s history and negotiates its status as a site of production, while generating new works and future material for its archive. The critical reader Entering a Site of Production accompanies the exhibition, documenting and reflecting on the project:

“In working with the museum as an object of study, we accumulated a great deal of material for future research, and in the process of preparing this exhibition and publication, we found ourselves becoming part of what we were analyzing. By producing new works of art and generating material for future archives, we have aimed to create a site of production rather than an abstract position of analytical distance.”

My main contribution to this project except for the co-curatorial part consist of a total of 174 images whereas 81 are shown through a Kodak Slide Carousel. The remaining 94 images are shot on medium format B/W film and projected on to the same sheet of Silver Gelatine paper, resulting in a black square:

Synopsis: How one keeps one’s garden hose is a visible, though commonly overlooked, sign of one’s moral attitude towards the social whole. Often communal property, easily tangled and damaged through neglect, a well-coiled hose shows one’s consideration for the next user and the proper functioning of the group. This beautifully printed book contains twenty-seven examples, taken from the backyards and sidewalks of Los Angeles, Oslo, and Buenos Aires. The hoses, wound and unwound, are at a once an exploration into the variations of coiled form and color, and provide a somehow intimate profile of the absent user.
